This book was written in 1898 and the colonial attitude of the writer is evident in his descriptions of the original inhabitants of Porto Rico and in his certainty that Cuba would very soon be a state of America. Notwithstanding this, however, it is a very descriptive and informative account of Porto Rico more than 100 years ago. The first six chapters describe the climate, topography, customs, locals and resources in detail. The second half focuses on how America has helped Port Rico and what possession of it would mean for America.
