This book is about English social life and customs and in particular horse-drawn coach travel in the nineteenth century. He begins first by describing the stagecoach journeys, so called because they were punctuated by coach houses along the route at various 'stages' . He describes the typical stagecoach driver as a large man with several whips. Although this may sound cruel to modern ears, without his methods the horses would probably not have completed the journeys expected of them.
