Thoughts on the Proposed Inclosure of Waltham (commonly called Epping) and Hainault Forests

Über das Buch

This historical work, written in 1818, presents a plan for the deforestation of Hainault and Waltham or Epping Forest along with the heads of the Bill proposed for that purpose by Thomas Street. He re-published his thoughts when the Lord Warden of Epping Forest, William Long-Wellesley, consented to the enclosure of 3,000 acres of forest land by the lords of the manors, who held permanent tenure of property in the forest. The government was eager to enclose the forest area for farming and building expansion and allowed the Commissioners of Woods, Forests, and Land Revenues to sell the further freeholds in the forest. This work was his attempt to convince the readers to give their sincere support to the Bill that had been proposed. Epping forests were a part of the royal forests and were located in Greater London. Waltham Forest was a legally restricted area that included the areas later known as Epping Forest and Hainault Forest; what was left of the Waltham Forest area was less wooded.
