Serena left the children with her friend and went to Liam’s office. She was wearing a long coat and absolutely nothing underneath. Her hope was to get a few minutes alone with him in the office. She could not even remember when the last time they had sex was. By the time he usually got home she was already too tired to do anything. Even though she trusted her husband, Serena knew something had to change. She could not blame Liam for never being home because she knew they needed the money.

She started by acting as his friend and listening to his problems. He felt guilty for working so many hours. Liam was also scared that his marriage was in trouble because of this. Kathy pretended that she cared for him and she earned his trust. Before he knew it, they ended up having sex. This meant nothing for him. The only reason it happened was because he had a little too much to drink after a business meeting.

Liam never intended to cheat on his wife. They were still so happy together. His job was keeping him away for long hours every day and this was harming their marriage. However, he planned to change his schedule and spend more time with his wife. What happened with his assistant was almost like an accident. He didn’t plan it but it happened. He took all the blame and hoped Kathy would not become a problem. After all, she knew very well he was not a free man. She came on to him and she accepted the risk. As far as his wife was concerned, there was no need for her to know anything. Liam did not see what good could come from being honest. In the end he would clear his conscience but Serena would get hurt. He wasn’t going to do that to her. Like a real man, he was going to live with his actions and guilt.

Nothing else happened between them since then. Kathy hoped that meant the beginning of a long affair but the next day he acted like nothing even happened. It was business as usual. She was the assistant and he was the boss. She was disappointed about that. Kathy already fantasized that he would leave his wife to be with him. Maybe he would even marry her someday. All her dreams were crushed the next morning when he didn’t even look at her while asking if he had any messages. She spent a few minutes crying in the bathroom.

When she got back to her work space, her makeup was as perfect as her smile. She did not want to be just another girl crying and begging for his love. She was sure he would ask her to be his girlfriend soon enough. Kathy had a special relationship with him. She was not just his secretary. She knew every little detail of his life and he always asked her for advice. This had to mean something. So she decided to be patient and keep her hopes up.

The day she saw Serena getting out of his office with her hair messed up and trying to close her coat, she let jealousy take over her. As soon as Serena left, she stormed into his office and started to scream. She felt that she waited patiently for him to come to his senses. From what he told her, they hardly ever had sex anymore. At that moment, Liam understood she could possible destroy his marriage. This was something he had to avoid at all cost. He had no choice but to tell her to leave. He could find plenty of reasons to fire her. She wasn’t exactly the employee of the month. Kathy left but this was not over for her. It was the first time in her life a man rejected her. She was more decided than ever to break his marriage at any cost. She thought she was in love but now her feelings were suddenly transforming into hate.

Kathy’s plan was to destroy the relationship he had with Serena. She wanted to make his wife lose her trust in him. However, she could not just show up at her door and tell her everything. One day when Liam forgot his cell phone in his office, she quickly checked Serena’s phone number. Even then she had a feeling she might need it someday. She grabbed her cell phone and wrote:

When Serena read the SMS, she dropped the phone on the floor. The color disappeared from her face and she looked like she was about to faint. She trusted her husband completely but that message was too much for her. She wondered if it was just a bad joke. But who would want to hurt her so bad? When Liam got back home that night, she showed him the message. His hands were trembling and when she looked into her eyes, she knew. The overwhelming guilt she saw let her know more than he could had done it with words. Serena felt her whole world crumbling at her feet. She could not scream or make a scene because their children were in the next room. She was so shocked that she could not find any words. All she could say was:

“You broke my heart…”

With tears in her eyes, she slammed the bedroom door and left him sleep on the couch. The reason he didn’t tell her was because he did not feel she deserved to suffer. As far as he was concerned, it was just a mistake. He felt guilty about it and he was ready to live with that guilt for the rest of his life. Liam thought it was better to let her calm down and talk the next day. He planned to finally get a day off from work. This was more important than his job. His marriage was in trouble and he had to make Serena see that she was the only woman for him. He could blame it on being drunk but he had no idea why it happened. It was like for a few moments he lost his mind. Needless to say, Liam could not sleep at all that night. Before she got up, he went and bought her favorite flowers. He filled the living room with them and waited patiently for Serena to get out of the bedroom.

Suddenly, he realized something was wrong. The house was all quiet. By this time he could hear his children. Liam stormed into the bedroom and he was shocked to see there was no one there. Serena took the kids and left while he was out buying the flowers. On the nightstand he saw a note:

“I took the kids and left to my mom’s house. I need time to think.”

“What have I done??”

He tried to call her mom but she told him she did not want to talk to him yet. He understood she needed some space but he was terrified. Liam could not imagine his life without Serena. He knew it was all his fault but he hated the way Kathy acted. He called her and asked her to meet him. First of all, he wanted to make sure her pregnancy was not real. This would mean the end of his marriage. He hoped Serena would forgive him for the cheating but he knew in his heart that she could not get over it if he had a baby with another woman. This was worse since Serena was trying to get pregnant herself.

She just told him that the best Christmas gift for her would be another baby. This would make Liam really happy too. He wanted another child but not from another woman. He also knew that if Kathy was really pregnant, he had to take care of her and the baby. He loved his children more than anything else in the world. Liam could never imagine not being in the life of his child. This is why it was really important to find out the truth.

Kathy was nervous about meeting Liam. She knew he was probably really mad and with good reason. He sounded really upset on the phone. They met at a coffee shop. She felt more comfortable with meeting in a public space. She made sure to have some tears in her eyes when he showed up.

“Liam, I am so sorry for sending that message to your wife. I was so hurt…I know you don’t feel anything for me but I love you…There… I said it.”

“I don’t feel anything for you! You got that right! I was honest with you and you knew how much my family means to me. What happened between us was a big mistake. You had no right to destroy my marriage. My wife left the house and she took the kids too. I might lose everything…”

She knew Liam would ask for proof of pregnancy and she was a step ahead of him. She asked a friend to get her a fake echography scan online. Of course she realized sooner or later he will see there is no baby. However, her main goal now was to get her revenge and make him get a divorce. She also hoped to start a relationship with him and to get pregnant for real.

Liam was feeling really confused. As much as he hated having a child with another woman, he could not help getting excited about his unborn baby. Serena was still living with her mom and she was not ready to take a decision regarding their marriage yet. He went there every day to see his children and to talk to her. As much as she tried, Serena could not hate him. Her love for him was as strong as ever. She was hurt not just because he slept with another woman. That she could forgive. Because of the routine, his job, and children, they took each other for granted lately.

He was a man and in a way she could understand. However, this was not just about an affair. He was going to have a baby with that woman. Worst of all was that she really wanted a baby herself and this hurt her even more. Serena had no idea if their marriage could be saved but at the same time she could not let him go.

While her mom was out with the children, they were home alone. Like two strangers, none of them knew what to say. Liam was trying to find the right words not to upset her even more.
