The story opens as a couple climb a steep hill in America. The woman is 34 and her husband is several years older. He, Lewis, is a lawyer and of a good family. She, Athalia, is from a far less distinguished background, impetuous, full of life and energy. They are on a long train journey, but during a long wait at a station, they have decided to climb a hill to see the view…..
